An apple a day, keeps the doctor away.
Have you heard of Apple Cider Vinegar? If not, you should get familiar! This all-purpose cleaner, weight loss booster, and popular kitchen staple has its roots in ancient times.
According to Britannica, Hippocrates of Cos (460 BCE – 375 BCE), was an ancient Greek physician who lived during Greece’s classical period and is traditionally known as the father of medicine. It is said that he used ACV and honey as a health tonic.
So, how can Apple Cider Vinegar benefit you in the modern era? There are at least 40 ways to use ACV in the household and in your health regimen. G and I have compiled a list of the ways we incorporate apple cider vinegar into our lives.
**Please consult your healthcare provider FIRST before trying any of these home remedies.
- Detoxifying Bath: 1 Cup ACV, Epsom Salt (see directions of favorite brand), and Essential Oil of Choice (Camomile or Lavender assist with sleeping and calmness).
- Gnat/Fly Trap: 1 part ACV (enough to cover the bottom of a glass or bowl) and a few drops (about 5) of Dishwashing Liquid as a “glue” helps with “catching” the gnats.
- Constipation: Drink 1 part ginger (fresh or ground) and 1 part ACV. This mixture will ignite intestinal contractions allowing the flow of bowels. Takes approximately 30 minutes to an hour.
- All-Purpose Cleaner: Mix equal parts water and ACV in a spray bottle. To give the mixture a fragrance add an essential oil of your choice.
- Sore Throat: 1 Shot ACV and 1 Shot Water mixed.
- Yeast Infection: Soak in a bath with 1-2 Cups ACV. Another option, if you don’t like baths, soak a tampon (inside applicator) in ACV and insert into the vagina. Leave tampon inserted for 10-15 minutes, shower and dry area completely.Repeat twice daily. If symptoms persist or get worse consult your primary healthcare physician.
- Flea Deterrent (pets): Use as the FINAL rinse on your pooch after a bath to deter fleas.
- Hair Rinse: I’ve never actually used ACV as a hair rinse but I’ve heard that the benefits are worth it. So I snagged this recipe from Chagrin Valley Soap & Salve Company website.
- Mix 1 to 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (ACV) with 8 ounces of water. Experiment to find a dilution that works best for you (dry hair likes less ACV and oily hair like more).
